Filling Your Vault
Your BoxOwl personal data vault stores all your personal information in one secure, private place. Fill it in once — autofill anything, anytime.
BoxOwl stores structured personal data across several categories. Each field has a visibility setting: private (only you), shared (with connections), or public (on your profile).
Identity
Personal identity information
Your core identity — used for passport applications, government forms, financial accounts, and more. Fields:
- Prefix, first, middle, last, suffix — your legal name components (e.g., Dr., Jr., III)
- Preferred name — what you go by; used as the display name on your public profile when set
- Pronouns — free text (e.g., she/her, he/him, they/them)
- Gender — one of:
male,female,non_binary,genderqueer,transgender,intersex,other,prefer_not_to_say,unknown - Profile photo — Gravatar or custom URL
Birth information (birthDate, birth place, birth time) lives in its own Birth Info category, not in Identity.
Tip: Use preferredName on your public profile instead of your legal name if you prefer.
Email addresses
Add every email address you use. Mark one as primary — the extension will prioritize it on signup forms. Each email has a label, the address itself, a primary flag, and a verified flag set after email confirmation.
Labels: personal, work, academic, other.
Phone
Phone numbers
Store mobile, home, and work numbers. Each phone has a label, number (E.164 format recommended), primary flag, and a verified flag.
Labels: mobile, home, work, fax, other.
Addresses
Physical addresses
Street, city, state/province, postal code, and country (ISO 3166-1 alpha-2). Apartment/unit goes in the street line. Each address has a primary flag and a separate shipping flag the extension prefers at checkout.
Labels: home, work, vacation, billing, shipping, mailing, other.
Social Profiles
Social media and portfolio links
Each profile records the platform, your username on it, the full URL, and an optional platform-side id. Supported platforms include GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, LinkedIn, Twitter, Mastodon, Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, YouTube, TikTok, Discord, Telegram, Signal, and email.
Profiles marked public appear on your BoxOwl public profile page at boxowl.me/u/yourhandle.
Work History
Employment history
Employer, job title, department, start and end dates, a current flag for your present role, location, and a description field for responsibilities or notes.
Preferences
Size, style, and shopping preferences
Your sizing and shopping signals power smarter autofill and (eventually) size-match badges. Fields include:
- Clothing sizes — shirt, pants, dress, shoe, shoe width; plus a clothing gender (
mens/womens) and size system (us/uk/eu/au/japan) - Fit —
slim, regular, relaxed, athletic - Style root — primary and optional secondary style:
sun,earth,stone,mushroom,mountain,moon,fire,flower - Budget band —
budget,mid_range,premium,luxury,vary_by_item - Interests, color preferences, material preferences, care requirements
Visibility Controls
Every field has a visibility setting:
- private — only accessible to you, via your JWT-authenticated sessions
- shared — accessible to people you've connected with via the social layer
- public — visible on your public profile at
boxowl.me/u/yourhandle
Change visibility per-field or per-category from the vault edit screen.
Exporting Your Data
You can export your full vault as JSON at any time from Settings > Data > Export Vault. The export includes all categories and visibility flags. It does not include your encryption keys.
